Vienna

Away-day guide

unverified draft

Vienna is easy to handle on a short away trip: the U1 runs directly from the centre towards the Generali Arena, while central pubs and the Favoriten district provide cheaper food before the match. Drink in town and follow the designated away route rather than heading for Austria Wien’s home-fan forecourt.

🚺 To Generali Arena

From Stephansplatz, take U1 towards Oberlaa to Altes Landgut, then follow signs for the Generali Arena; the walk from the station is about 5-10 minutes. From Hauptbahnhof, either join U1 at Südtiroler Platz-Hauptbahnhof or take local transport towards Reumannplatz and follow any match-specific away instructions.

Parking
Do not plan on parking beside the stadium on matchday. Road controls and supporter segregation can restrict access. P+R Verteilerkreis at Altes Landgut is the nearest practical public car park, but public transport is safer for away groups.

Public transport

Metro · Vienna U-Bahn Tram · Vienna tram network Bus · Wiener Linien buses Suburban rail · Vienna S-Bahn Bike share · WienMobil Rad

The U-Bahn is the quickest option for most supporters, backed up by trams, buses and ÖBB S-Bahn services. The Generali Arena is on the U1 at Altes Landgut. Buy tickets from station machines, Wiener Linien offices or the WienMobil app; paper tickets that are not already time-stamped must be validated before the first journey. A standard Vienna ticket does not cover the full journey to the airport. A 24-hour ticket is generally worthwhile if making several journeys, while longer-stay visitors should compare the seven-day ticket. Night buses run after the U-Bahn closes on weekday nights; the U-Bahn normally runs through the night before Saturdays and Sundays. Alcohol must not be consumed on Wiener Linien vehicles or in stations.

Airports & cheaper alternatives

  • Vienna International Airport VIE primary 19 km Take S7 suburban rail to Wien Mitte in roughly 25 minutes, or a Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. Airport journeys require a ticket covering the zone outside Vienna; check the destination carefully when buying. The main airport and normally the easiest option. The regular S-Bahn and Railjet services are cheaper than the dedicated CAT airport train.
  • Bratislava Airport BTS alternative 65 km Take Bratislava bus 61 to Bratislava hlavná stanica, then a regional train to Vienna Hauptbahnhof. Coach connections via Bratislava city centre are another option. Ryanair fares can be much cheaper, but allow around two hours for the transfer and possible traffic or missed connections.

🍺 Supporters' pubs

FK Austria Wien

Home fans: Viola Pub/Viola Sportsbar in the stadium complex and the Ost-Vorplatz are the main matchday gathering points. Café City-X by Altes Landgut and Café Violet on Schlachthausgasse are also associated with Austria supporters.

Away fans: There is no reliably documented regular away pub beside the Generali Arena. Drink centrally and use the U1. Johnny’s Pub near Taubstummengasse, 1516 Brewing Company and The Tube Station are neutral choices. Avoid the Viola Pub and Ost-Vorplatz in away colours.

Viola Pub is officially for home supporters on matchdays. Visiting groups are normally given a segregated route and separate tunnel entrance; follow the instructions supplied for the particular European fixture.

SK Rapid Wien

Home fans: Rapid Kantine and Go West beside the Allianz Stadion, plus the Bahnhofstraße and Hütteldorf station area. Stag’s Head, Gasthaus Peschta, Café Corner and Stüberl zum Weststadion are established Rapid places and should be treated as home territory.

Away fans: Flanagans near Karlsplatz has been recommended to visiting supporters and sits conveniently for the direct U4 to Hütteldorf. 1516 Brewing Company and The Tube Station are other neutral central options. Avoid the pubs beside the Weststadion and do not enter Block West in opposition colours.

Rapid play at the Allianz Stadion rather than the Generali Arena. Block West operates a no-opposition-colours rule; away supporters outside the designated section should dress neutrally and avoid the home fan block.

Sourced from supporters' forums — always follow your club's and police advice for the fixture.

Nightlife

The Gürtel under the U6 viaduct, especially around Thaliastraße and Josefstädter Straße, has late bars and clubs without the prices of the Innere Stadt. Neubau and Spittelberg are better for mixed groups wanting pubs, small bars and food within walking distance. The Bermudadreieck around Schwedenplatz is the obvious central late-night area and easy for the U1, though it is touristier. In warmer months, the Donaukanal bars between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring are busy but can be relatively expensive.

Food & drink

Try Wiener schnitzel, tafelspitz, goulash, käsekrainer from a Würstelstand and a leberkäse roll with mustard or horseradish. Vienna’s coffee houses are worth doing once: order a Melange if you want something close to a cappuccino. Ottakringer is the main Vienna beer, with Schwechater and Wieselburger also common. A service charge is usually included, but rounding up by roughly 5-10% for decent table service is normal.

Cheap eats & beer

For a quick central feed, Leberkas-Pepi on Operngasse sells thick leberkäse rolls, while Kolar on Kleeblattgasse does filling flatbreads and house beer. Bitzinger by the Albertina is handy for käsekrainer and other sausages, though its location makes it dearer than neighbourhood stands. Around Reumannplatz and the pedestrian stretch of Favoritenstraße, on the route to the ground, there are plenty of Turkish bakeries, kebab shops and Balkan grills where 6-10 buys a substantial meal. Nearer the stadium, options become thinner, so eat around Reumannplatz rather than relying on the arena. Johnny’s Pub near Taubstummengasse is convenient for the U1 and has been recommended by Austria supporters; 1516 Brewing Company and The Tube Station are central football-watching options, but not the cheapest. Käuzchen in Neubau is a good-value traditional pub away from the tourist core. There is no established away pub at the Generali Arena: travelling groups should use the meeting place issued by their club or police.

Staying safe

Vienna is generally straightforward, but watch phones and wallets around Stephansplatz, Hauptbahnhof, Praterstern and packed U-Bahn trains. Keep groups together when leaving the stadium and follow police or steward directions rather than cutting through home-supporter areas. Avoid displaying away colours around Ost-Vorplatz, Viola Pub or other obvious Austria gathering points. Ticket inspections are common and travelling without a validated ticket brings a substantial penalty. Licensed taxis use meters; an app or pre-booked airport fixed fare avoids arguments.

On matchday

The away section at the Generali Arena has a segregated approach and separate tunnel entrance. Visiting groups are commonly directed via Reumannplatz or Laaerbergstraße rather than through the home gathering area at Ost-Vorplatz. Use the route and meeting point issued by your club, as police arrangements can change for European fixtures. Conceal away colours near the ground until you reach the designated route, and do not use the home-only Viola Pub. Altes Landgut may be busy or subject to managed access after the match; no permanent closure should be assumed, so check Wiener Linien and club updates on the day.
