Munich

Away-day guide

Munich is easy to navigate and excellent for beer halls, but accommodation and central drinking can be expensive. Base yourself near an U-Bahn or S-Bahn station, eat before heading to the Allianz Arena and leave extra time for the long walk and away-end checks.

Public transport

Metro · U-Bahn Tram · Munich tram Bus · Munich bus network Suburban rail · S-Bahn München Bike share · MVG Rad

The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses are integrated under MVV ticketing. Central Munich is zone M; Munich Airport is in zone 5, so an airport journey needs M–5 coverage. A zone-M single is suitable for one journey, while a zone-M day ticket is normally better after several trips. Group day tickets cover up to five adults and are useful for travelling support. Buy through MVGO or the MVV app, or from station machines. Digital tickets do not need stamping; paper tickets without a printed validity time must be validated before travel. There are no ticket barriers, but plain-clothes inspections are common. For the Allianz Arena, take U6 towards Garching-Forschungszentrum and get off at Fröttmaning.

Airports & cheaper alternatives

  • Munich Airport MUC primary 29 km S1 and S8 trains run to the city centre; allow roughly 40–50 minutes to Hauptbahnhof or Marienplatz. An airport ticket must cover zones M–5. The main airport and by far the easiest option, although fares can be higher than Memmingen.
  • Memmingen Airport FMM alternative 110 km The Allgäu Airport Express runs directly to Munich Hauptbahnhof. Alternatively, take the local bus to Memmingen station and continue by regional train. Often cheaper for budget-airline flights, but the transfer adds around 90 minutes each way and late arrivals can be awkward.

🍺 Supporters' pubs

FC Bayern München

Home fans: The active home support meets at Südkurvenplatz, beside the Fröttmaning U-Bahn exit and P&R at the start of the arena esplanade. Arena-Treff, Bauernfeindstraße 19, is the main nearby pub and is heavily Bayern-oriented; it becomes packed and booking is advisable. The Paulaner Fan-Treff North and South inside the arena are restricted to home supporters.

Away fans: Away groups commonly meet around Marienplatz and the Altstadt. Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, Kilians Irish Pub and adjoining Ned Kelly’s at Frauenplatz 11 are established options; Augustiner-Keller, Arnulfstraße 52, has much more room. Stadion an der Schleißheimer Straße, Schleißheimer Straße 82, is a neutral football-focused pub but reservations are normally needed. Some larger groups use the English Garden. Avoid Südkurvenplatz and Arena-Treff in away colours, and do not rely on entering either Paulaner Fan-Treff inside the stadium because both are home-only.

Bayern are Munich’s only senior club in the 2026–27 UEFA competitions and play in the Champions League. Away supporters must use the designated guest entrance and hold an away-sector ticket. Anyone identifiable as an away fan can be refused entry to, relocated from or ejected from home sections.

Nightlife

The Altstadt around Marienplatz, Platzl and Frauenplatz is easiest for a short trip, with beer halls and Irish pubs that can handle groups, though prices are tourist-level. Glockenbachviertel around Müllerstraße and Fraunhoferstraße has later bars and a mixed crowd. Maxvorstadt, particularly around Universität, has student pubs and generally better-value drinks. Schwabing around Münchner Freiheit has plenty of bars but is spread out. Werksviertel-Mitte, behind Ostbahnhof, is the main option for clubs and late venues; check door policies and avoid arriving as one large group in colours.

Food & drink

Try Weisswurst with sweet mustard and a pretzel, traditionally eaten earlier in the day; Leberkäse in a roll is the quick, cheaper option. Sit-down Bavarian staples include Schweinsbraten, sausages, Käsespätzle and Obatzda with bread or pretzels. Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner, Löwenbräu, Spaten and Hofbräu are the main local beers. A Maß is one litre, so check the menu if you only want a 0.5-litre beer. Beer gardens are good for groups in warm weather, with Augustiner-Keller and the Chinese Tower among the best-known.

Cheap eats & beer

Munich is not especially cheap, so move a few streets away from Marienplatz. Augustiner Bräustuben, Landsberger Straße 19, is a reliable beer-hall option with cheaper beer and Bavarian plates than the tourist halls in the Altstadt. Andy’s Krablergarten near Sendlinger Tor is known for large schnitzels; queues are common. Around Hauptbahnhof, especially along Schillerstraße and Landwehrstraße, Turkish bakeries, kebab shops and Asian counters provide filling meals for roughly 7–12. Bergwolf near Fraunhoferstraße is useful for late-night currywurst and chips. For cheaper student bars, look around Universität and the northern part of Maxvorstadt. Near the Allianz Arena there is little suited to a budget away following: eat and drink in town before taking the U6. Stadion an der Schleißheimer Straße is a football pub rather than a cheap-pint secret and should be booked. Away groups also use Kilians, Ned Kelly’s, Hofbräuhaus and Augustiner-Keller, though central beer-hall prices are higher.

Staying safe

Munich is generally safe, but watch phones and wallets around Hauptbahnhof, Marienplatz, crowded U-Bahn platforms and packed beer halls. Ticket inspectors operate across the network and travelling without a valid ticket brings a 60 penalty. Do not expect city-centre pubs to admit a large group in club colours late at night; split into smaller groups and follow staff instructions. Avoid home-support meeting points in away colours. Glass bottles, large bags, pyrotechnics and professional camera equipment may be refused at the stadium. Beer is stronger than many visiting fans expect, particularly when served by the litre.

On matchday

For the Allianz Arena, travel early on the U6: Fröttmaning becomes heavily congested and the walk along the esplanade, security checks and separate away entrance add time. Away supporters must use the guest entrance and the sector printed on their ticket; away colours are not permitted in designated home sections. Bags are restricted, so take only a small bag and check Bayern’s match-specific rules. Police may hold groups at Fröttmaning or alter access routes, while temporary traffic controls can affect Werner-Heisenberg-Allee and the arena car parks. Check your club’s final travel notice because meeting points, escorted trains and station arrangements can change by fixture.
