Lugano
Away-day guide
Lugano is compact, scenic and easy to cover over a weekend, but Swiss prices mean away fans should book beds early and use supermarkets, day tickets and hotel-issued Ticino Tickets. AIL Arena lies north of the centre at Cornaredo, around 15–20 minutes away by bus.
🚺 To AIL Arena
From Lugano Centro, take TPL bus 3 towards the Cornaredo/Resega side of the city and get off at Stadio. From Lugano railway station, bus 6 is normally the more direct option towards Cornaredo. Allow around 15–20 minutes on the bus plus security time.

- Parking
- Parking immediately around the arena is limited and affected by redevelopment of the Cornaredo sports complex. Use public transport or the Resega park-and-ride area rather than trying residential streets; roads beside the away entrance may be closed on matchdays.
Public transport
Central Lugano is compact but hilly: the lakefront, Piazza della Riforma and the railway station are walkable, with the station funicular saving a steep climb. TPL runs the urban buses, while TILO and the FLP S60 handle local rail journeys. Tickets use the Arcobaleno zonal system and must cover every zone crossed; buy before boarding from machines, through SBB Mobile or with FAIRTIQ. A city-zone single is roughly 2.60, while a day ticket is usually worthwhile after three or four rides. Guests staying in qualifying Ticino accommodation normally receive a Ticino Ticket, which includes public transport in the canton; ask the hotel before buying anything.

✈ Airports & cheaper alternatives
- Lugano Airport LUG primary 6 km Walk roughly 10 minutes to Agno station, then take the FLP S60 train to Lugano; the rail journey takes about 20 minutes. The local airport, but it currently has no useful scheduled airline service. Only consider it if flights resume or you are arriving privately.
- Milan Malpensa Airport MXP alternative 80 km TILO S50 trains provide through or straightforward connecting journeys from Malpensa to Lugano, normally taking around 1 hour 30 minutes. The most practical airport for Lugano and often much cheaper than flying into Switzerland. Allow extra time for the border crossing and check the last train after an evening arrival.
- Milan Bergamo Airport BGY alternative 120 km Take an airport coach to Milano Centrale, then an EC or regional train via Chiasso to Lugano. Allow about 3 hours, potentially longer with connections. A regular Ryanair option and sometimes the cheapest by a distance, but the transfer is longer and awkward after late flights.
- Zurich Airport ZRH alternative 210 km Take a train towards Zürich HB and connect to an IC service for Lugano. The full journey is roughly 2 hours 30 minutes. Usually dearer than the Milan airports, though the reliable rail connection can make it worthwhile when fares are close.
🍺 Supporters' pubs
FC Lugano
Home fans: Home support tends to gather around the Cornaredo stadium bars and in the Molino Nuovo area rather than at one universally recognised city-centre supporters' pub.
Away fans: Mr Pickwick Pub and Trinity Irish Pub in the centre are generally more practical neutral meeting points for visiting groups. There is no reliably established official away pub; avoid taking a large, vocal group into home-supporter venues immediately around Cornaredo unless directed there by police or the club.
For European fixtures, follow the venue printed on the ticket: FC Lugano have previously had to move UEFA matches when their Lugano ground did not meet competition requirements.
Sourced from supporters' forums — always follow your club's and police advice for the fixture.
Nightlife
Piazza della Riforma and the surrounding lanes are the easiest place to start, with plenty of bars and late cafés but fairly high prices. Quartiere Maghetti, immediately east of the old centre, has more bars packed into a small area and works well for groups moving between venues. Cassarate and the lakefront towards the Lido have a more relaxed bar scene, especially in warm weather. Lugano is quieter than Zurich or Milan: do not rely on finding busy late-night venues after midnight on a Sunday.
Food & drink
Ticino cooking mixes Swiss and northern Italian influences. Look for risotto, polenta with braised beef, luganighetta sausage, minestrone and plates of local cured meat and cheese. A grotto is the traditional place for these dishes, although the best-known ones are generally outside the compact centre. Ticino Merlot is the local wine; an aperitivo may include small snacks and can be better value than ordering several separate rounds.
Cheap eats & beer
Lugano is not a cheap drinking city, so supermarket food and aperitivo deals make a real difference. The Manor food hall and restaurant by Piazza Dante is useful for a quick meal without full restaurant prices, while the Migros and Coop branches around the centre are good for sandwiches, salads and cans before heading north. Mr Pickwick Pub on Corso Pestalozzi and Trinity Irish Pub on Via Canonica are central, straightforward choices for groups, though a 500ml beer is still commonly around 7–9. For the ground, buy food in the centre or around Molino Nuovo before travelling: the immediate Cornaredo area has fewer budget options and matchday kiosks can become busy. There is no consistently designated away pub in Lugano.
Staying safe
Lugano is generally very safe, including around the centre and station. Normal precautions against phone and wallet theft are enough in crowded trains, bars and matchday queues. The station sits well above the centre, so use the funicular rather than following an unfamiliar steep route late at night. Keep away colours discreet if drinking near groups of home supporters around Cornaredo, and follow police instructions if visiting fans are being escorted. Swiss fines for disorder, public urination and travelling without a valid ticket are expensive.
On matchday
The away section is segregated, with its own controlled entrance and facilities; use the gate and approach shown on your ticket rather than walking around the stadium looking for another turnstile. Visiting groups may be met at Lugano station or directed onto dedicated buses, and police can temporarily restrict roads and pedestrian routes around Cornaredo. Arrive at least 45–60 minutes early because ticket checks and searches can be slow, and expect away supporters to be held briefly after the final whistle. Confirm the venue before travelling, particularly for UEFA games, because FC Lugano have previously staged European home fixtures elsewhere.
